Welcome to R/P1

Class Teacher: Ms K Carson

A very warm welcome from all our very Important little people in Reception, Primary 1 and 2!

Our teacher is Ms Carson and our classroom assistants this year are Mrs Lyons and Miss Paul. We are a super team and all work hard to make sure every little person in our class is cared for, respected and valued for their own unique qualities. Every child is special to us!

Our learning environment

We are lucky to have a bright, up to date classroom, a separate playroom full of wonderful areas of play, a dedicated outdoor space with mud kitchen, new fairy garden and play stations, a large field and secret garden to explore as well as use of the computer suite! We enjoy daily sessions outdoors and look forward to many adventures weekly during welly boot Wednesday!

Our daily activities

We follow a play-based curriculum where learning is through a range of fun, practical and engaging activities for our little learners both using the indoors and the outdoors. We cover all areas of the Northern Ireland curriculum for pre-school and for Foundation stage.

Literacy

We enjoy learning our sounds and words through Jolly Phonics, have the use of the Reading Eggs Computer app, both in school and at home and a library of our own. We learn to write through building our fine motor and gross motor skills in many different creative ways. We develop our talking and listening through Community of Enquiry lessons, show and tell and PDMU.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We enjoy learning all about our numbers and we learn to add and take-away. We learn to measure, sort, match, recognise and identify shapes, count coins and problem solve through engaging practical experiences.

Creativity

Creativity shines in Foundation Stage! We take part in singing and performances for school shows and assemblies. We also participate in local Speech and Drama Festivals. Art and design is important to us and we enjoy using lots of different media to create our special pictures and models.

Physical Development

Our class enjoys two structured PE lessons weekly as well as daily exercise with Go noodle sessions. We enjoy using our Playpark to strengthen our bodies as well as enjoying the benefits of fresh air. We frequently enjoy welly boot walks and are working towards walking a Daily Mile.

Topics

We love to find out about the World Around Us! Our exciting topics this year include:

  • Look at me, look at you

  • Surprise, surprise

  • Brrrr, it’s cold!

  • Once upon a time

  • Rumble in the jungle

Home links

Reception family members are invited for regular Stay and Play sessions when daddy, mummy or even granny can help to make a craft and read stories with their very important little person.

We like to use Seesaw as a way to share super learning and activities between home and school. Parents enjoy seeing a little taste of school life with the lovely photos we Seesaw home!

We love a range of homework, from shared reading books, practical challenges, skills development games and even an art or topic activity!

Shared Education and Community Links

We are lucky to benefit from shared learning with our partner school! The children develop new friendships and enjoy a wide variety of funded experiences.

We are also lucky to benefit from using the local library and making trips for adventures to the Forest!

We believe that our school promotes a very nurturing, safe and family orientated environment for our very important little people! We invite you to look through our photographs on Facebook to have a look at the fun learning experiences we enjoy in our class.
